Buckthorn control is a new service provided by Sandstrom Land Management. We are one of three vendors that are currently under contract with the State of Minnesota for conducting Buckthorn control and other native plant management services. We focus on this effort in the fall and winter months. We treat the stumps with herbicide to prevent re-growth in the following spring and summer months. Good control of this invasive species can be achieved using this method while minimizing adverse effects on native trees and woodland forbs. It usually takes a two to three year follow-up program to control seedlings resulting from the numerous seeds spread by adult trees. We use either or both mechanized and hand cutting methods, depending upon site conditions.
